Garden City is a city in Cass County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,500 at the 2000 census. Garden City is located at 38°33?31?N 94°11?21?W? / ?38.55861, -94.18917 (38.558731, -94.189231). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.7 square miles (4.5 km²), all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,500 people, 595 households, and 399 families residing in the city. The population density was 869.0 people per square mile (334.8/km²). There were 630 housing units at an average density of 365.0/sq mi (140.6/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.73% White, 0.20% African American, 0.47% Native American, 0.33% from other races, and 1.27% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.47% of the population. There were 595 households out of which 35.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.3% were married couples living together, 10.3% had a female householder with no husband.

An Environmental Working Group analysis of tap water tests from 1998 through 2002 shows that customers of Garden City drank water containing up to 25 pollutants, including 5 unregulated contaminants. Garden City is one of 65,000 water suppliers across the country wrestling with treating water polluted by sprawl, sewage, factory farms, and industry.
